Receiving Disclosures
Listen. Support. Refer. Report.
If someone shares with you that they have experienced discrimination, harassment, or interpersonal violence, there are a few steps to keep in mind. First, listen. Hear what they are saying without asking too many probing questions (unless they want to share more); support them and their vulnerability in sharing with you. Second, refer the person to campus and community resources that are relevant to their experiences (consult with page with options). Third, submit a report to OIE and explain to the person what will happen next, after you report (i.e., OIE will reach out to them to offer assistance and additional resources).
